Understand your plan choices

Get Covered Illinois has information to help you choose the best coverage for your needs and budget. You can compare plans by monthly premiums, deductibles, out-of-pocket costs, provider networks and covered services.

Health plans are grouped into categories based on how you and your plan share costs.

These categories affect:

  • Your premium (monthly cost)
  • Your deductibles, coinsurance and copayments (total out-of-pocket costs)

Tips to help you choose a health plan

Choosing the right plan depends on your health needs, budget and how often you use care. Here are some things to consider:

Your health care needs

  • How often do you visit the doctor? If you rarely go, a plan with lower monthly premiums and higher out-of-pocket costs might work for you.
  • Do you have a chronic condition or take regular prescriptions?  You may want a plan with higher premiums but lower costs when you get care.
  • To learn more about what is covered, go to Essential health benefits.

What you can afford

  • Think about how much you could pay out-of-pocket if you had an unexpected illness or injury.
  • Are you comfortable with a high deductible, or would you prefer to pay more monthly to reduce surprise costs?

Types of financial help

  • Most Illinois residents qualify for Premium Tax Credits to lower monthly costs.
  • If you qualify for Cost-Sharing Reductions, you need to enroll in a Silver plan to take advantage of that benefit.
  • To learn more about money you can save, go to Financial help.
