How to enroll
If you’ve had a recent life change, you may be able to enroll in health coverage through Get Covered Illinois. To compare plans and prices before applying or creating an account, use our plan and cost comparison tool.
Follow these steps to apply for a special enrollment period and enroll in coverage.
1. Log in or register
If you have a Get Covered Illinois account, log in. If you do not have an account, register now. Keep your login information in a safe place.
2. Complete your application
Select Start New Application and provide information about you and your household.
3. Report your life event
Select Confirm Event and Shop and choose your qualifying life event from the drop-down list.
4. Provide documentation
Most life events require supporting documents. To learn more about the documents required for most life events, visit our Qualifying Life Events page.
To upload your documents, return to your account Dashboard and select Upload Documents. After uploading your documents, select Submit Documents.
Get Covered Illinois will review your submission and notify you once an eligibility determination is made.
5. Shop and enroll
Once your life event is successfully confirmed, select Shop for Plans. Answer a few additional questions and begin shopping.
Once you've chosen a plan, add it to your cart. Then provide your electronic signature and select Submit Enrollment.
6. Make your first payment
To activate your coverage, you must pay the first month's premium directly to your new insurance company.
To make your first payment through your Get Covered Illinois account, open the My Enrollments tab and select Pay Now.
