Avoid health insurance scams

Get Covered Illinois provides a trusted, secure place to enroll in health and dental coverage and helps protect you from fraud. Whether you enroll on your own or work with a broker or navigator, we’re here to help you get covered with confidence.

Scam warning signs

Some third-party websites will attempt to represent an official health insurance marketplace. These are signs someone is trying to scam you about health insurance:

  • Requests for payment for enrollment help. Enrollment help through Get Covered Illinois is always free.
  • Requests for payment through gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or payment apps such as Venmo.
  • Unexpected or a high number of calls or messages, pressuring you to purchase coverage.
  • Pressure to act immediately or “limited-time” offers.
  • Links that direct you to unfamiliar websites.
  • Requests for personal information, like your phone number, email address, Social Security number or payment details.

5 Tips to avoid scams

1. Use official websites

  • Official Get Covered Illinois websites will always end in “.gov.”
    • Scam websites may use similar names or URLs, but they cannot use a .gov URL or email address.
  • If someone is helping you enroll, ask whether they are using GetCoveredIllinois.gov, getcovered.illinois.gov or enroll.getcoveredIllinois.gov. If they are not, do not provide personal or financial information.

2. Pay for your health insurance to your insurance company directly

  • You will always pay for your health insurance to the insurance company directly.
  • Never pay monthly premiums with cash.

3. Watch out for suspicious offers

  • If someone contacts you about “special rates, "limited-time" offers, or discount plans, do not share personal information or click suspicious links. Scammers may try to steer you toward a fake or misleading limited benefits plan that charges a fee but provides little or no real benefit. Please visit our website or call us directly to verify an offer before signing up or providing any personal or payment information.

4. Verify enrollment help

  • Confirm that a broker or navigator is certified by visiting GetCoveredIllinois.gov/LocalHelp and searching our broker or navigator directory before scheduling an appointment or sharing personal information.
  • Keep a record of who assisted you. Document their name, certification number, phone number, address and website.

5. Protect your contact information

  • Get Covered Illinois will never require your phone number or email to show health insurance prices or estimate financial assistance.

Report suspected scams

To report suspected fraud or a scam, contact our compliance department at gci.compliance@illinois.gov or call our customer assistance center at 866-311-1119 (TTY: 711).

It helps to provide:

  • The name of the person, company or website involved
  • Phone numbers, email addresses or website links connected to the scam
  • Dates and times of calls, messages or interactions
  • Screenshots, emails, texts or voicemails, if available
  • Details about what happened and why you believe it may be fraud

You don’t need to have every detail to call. Any information you can provide may help us investigate suspected fraud.
