Immigration status and supporting documents

You can apply for health insurance if you are lawfully present in the U.S. Get Covered Illinois uses your information only to check if you can get coverage and financial help. Your information won't be used for immigration enforcement purposes.

Applying for coverage: What to know about immigration status

When applying for or renewing health insurance through Get Covered Illinois, it's important to provide current information about your immigration status. Federal changes for 2027 may affect your eligibility for financial help, even if you previously qualified.

  1. Log in or create an account. Start a new application or review your existing information.

  2. Review and select your eligible immigration status. The application will ask if you are a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or have an eligible immigration status.

Some questions and options have changed for 2027. Carefully review the choices and select the status that reflects your current situation. Your answers may affect your eligibility for coverage and financial help.

  3. Enter your information carefully and have supporting documents ready. Make sure you enter your name, document numbers and other information, and that they match your official documents to help Get Covered Illinois check your status.

  4. Watch for updates about your application. We will let you know what’s next. If we can’t confirm your status, we’ll let you know and ask for more information.

Are you applying for your family?

You can apply for health insurance for the family members who qualify, even if you don’t qualify yourself. Each person’s status is looked at separately. Eligible family members may also qualify for premium tax credits.
