Understanding your provider network

A provider network is a list of providers and facilities that an insurance plan contracts with to provide care to its members, typically referred to as in-network providers.

Types of providers

There are two types of providers: in-network provider and out-of-network provider.

An in-network provider or facility is one that an insurance company contracts with to provide services to its members. Using an in-network provider will likely keep your health care costs lower.

An out-of-network provider is one that an insurance company has not contracted with. Services provided by an out-of-network provider are generally more expensive.

How to find a provider

Get Covered Illinois has a tool called the provider directory. The provider directory can help you find insurance plans that your health care provider is in-network with.

How to find a provider

  1. Access the provider directory by going to enroll.getcovered.illinois.gov/prescreener.
  2. Answer a few questions about your household.
  3. Then you can choose to search for your preferred provider by doctor, dentist, or facility name in or near your specified ZIP code.

Which providers are in-network?

When you view plans available in your area, you will see red, yellow or green marks displaying under “my facilities,” “my doctors,” and “my dentists.”

  • Red means that provider/facility is out-of-network
  • Green means it is in-network
  • Yellow means that provider or facility is partially in-network. For example, the dermatology department at a facility may be in-network but rheumatology at the same location is out-of-network.

Please note the information in the provider directory is updated weekly; however, you should always double check your providers directly with the insurance company before seeking care. Your insurance company’s website will always have the most up-to-date information.
